Immediate Results for Renewed Confidence

One-stage implant reconstruction is a highly effective procedure completed during the same surgery as the mastectomy. With immediate reconstruction, the final breast implant is placed at the time of mastectomy, eliminating the need for multiple surgeries and providing immediate results. Dr. Yau is committed to providing exceptional outcomes with a streamlined approach that prioritizes both aesthetics and patient comfort.

However, not all patients are candidates for this type of reconstruction. Factors such as the type and stage of breast cancer, tumor size, lymph node involvement, and the need for radiation influence eligibility. Patients who have received or will receive radiation therapy are often better candidates for flap reconstruction due to the adverse effects of radiation on implants. For those deemed suitable for implant reconstruction, Dr. Yau favors the one-stage procedure for its ability to preserve the breast skin, leading to excellent aesthetic results with fewer surgeries.

Is One-Stage Implant Reconstruction Right for You?

You may be a good candidate for one-stage implant reconstruction if you have adequate skin remaining after mastectomy, prefer a simpler single-surgery approach, and are not planning to undergo radiation therapy. This option is ideal for women seeking faster recovery and a streamlined process.

It works especially well for those with smaller to moderate breast size who are in good overall health. While it offers quicker results compared to flap procedures, it’s important to understand that some patients may still need minor revision surgery later for optimal symmetry.

Benefits of One-Stage Implant Reconstruction?

  • Single Surgery:
Complete your breast reconstruction in one operation instead of multiple stages.

  • Faster Recovery:
Shorter overall recovery time compared to flap procedures.

  • No Donor Site Scars:
No scars on your back, abdomen, or other areas since no tissue is taken from elsewhere.

  • Predictable Results:
Allows for immediate breast mound creation right after mastectomy.

  • Natural-Looking Shape:
Modern implants can create a soft, natural appearance with good skin coverage.

  • Less Time Off Work:
Most patients return to normal daily activities within 2–3 weeks.

The One-Stage Implant Reconstruction Procedure: Precision and Expertise

Dr. Yau takes a highly skilled approach to the one-stage implant reconstruction procedure, ensuring optimal results. Surgery typically lasts 2.5 to 3.5 hours, including mastectomy time.

The procedure involves the following steps:

  1. Mastectomy: The general surgeon performs the mastectomy, removing the nipple and underlying breast tissue.

  2. Elevating the Pectoralis Major Muscle: The pectoralis major muscle is carefully elevated to create a pocket for the implant, covering the top portion of the breast implant.

  3. Implant Coverage: Based on the patient's breast shape and excess skin availability, the lower portion of the implant is covered using one of the following two techniques:

Option 1 (For Non-Droopy Breasts):

This procedure is ideal for patients with non-droopy breasts and minimal excess skin. In these cases, the lower portion of the implant is covered with a regenerative tissue matrix to provide additional support and a more natural contour. One of the most commonly used materials is Alloderm.

Alloderm is a donated human skin tissue that has been specially processed to remove all cells and the outer layer (epidermis). Once placed in the body, it develops a new blood supply and becomes integrated with your own tissue as your cells repopulate the matrix.

Option 2 (For Droopy Breasts with Excess Skin):

This technique is suitable for patients with droopier breasts and excess breast skin. In these cases, the lower portion of the implant is covered using the patient's own skin after the top layer (epidermis) is removed.

This approach is not viable for non-droopy breasts, as they lack sufficient excess skin. However, in larger, droopier breasts, the excess skin at the lower breast can be effectively utilized to cover the implant.

Each technique is selected based on your specific anatomy and needs, ensuring an optimal, natural-looking breast reconstruction.
